KUSIKUY
is 100% sweatshop free. We work with knitting groups that are self
managed and enable participants to work within their indigenous
culture. Urban migration is a big problem in the Andes region where
ancestral properties and traditions are lost as people move to the
cities in search of jobs. KUSIKUY travels to remote villages to
provide work in these rural settings helps preserve traditional
culture while creating an important source of income in some of
the Andes' poorest regions.
KUSIKUY
hand knitters earn triple minimum wage.
KUSIKUY hand loomers earn double minimum wage - always.
KUSIKUY
has been a member of the Fair Trade Federation since 2001. We personally
know and regularly visit the carefully selected producer groups
we work with. Over the years we have formed strong friendships with
these wonderfully talented people. We support them in their development
both professionally and personally and proudly comply with all Fair
Trade criteria. Our popular Eco Tours give participants the opportunity
to visit with these talented producer groups and experience their
rich culture.
Fair
Trade Federation (FTF) criteria are:
-
Paying a fair wage in the local context.
- Offering
employees opportunities for advancement.
- Providing
equal employment opportunities for all people.
- Engaging
in environmentally sustainable practices.
- Being
open to public accountability.
- Building
long-term trade relationships.
- Providing
healthy and safe working conditions within the local context.
- Providing
financial and technical assistance to producers whenever possible.
The
business generated by Fair Trade Organizations in Europe and the
U.S. now accounts for an estimated US $400 million. The rapidly
growing fair trade movement is setting standards that could redefine
world trade to include more social and environmental considerations.
